Comparing the curves without the development chronology can lead to the wrong conclusion about reservoir quality.
Spacing changes what the analog means
Distance alone is not enough. Relative landing position, orientation, stagger, bench relationship and completion timing can all affect interference. A nearby well may be geographically close but technically less comparable than a farther well developed under more similar conditions.
Parent-child effects belong in pre-drill risk
When a proposed well is surrounded by existing producers, the forecast should reflect that context. The relevant question is not only how the best offsets performed, but how wells drilled into comparable development density and depletion states behaved.
The objective is not to penalize every child well
Interference is not a universal explanation for underperformance, and not every infill well will disappoint. The value comes from identifying when development context materially changes the analog population and the uncertainty around the forecast.
Better comparisons lead to better capital allocation
Once development context is visible, technical teams can distinguish reservoir signal from spacing and depletion effects more effectively. That improves drilling-location ranking, expected-value comparisons and the credibility of the decision presented to management.
