Raw production curves are not automatically comparable.
Differences in lateral length, time on production, operating history, completion design and surrounding development can make two wells look more—or less—different than the reservoir actually is.
Scale can masquerade as quality
A longer lateral may produce more total volume than a shorter lateral even when the underlying rock is not materially better. Comparing absolute production without context can reward scale rather than reservoir quality. Normalized views can help reveal whether performance differences persist after major geometric differences are considered.
Time matters too
Early-time production, mature decline and cumulative recovery answer different questions. A newer well cannot be compared fairly with an older offset by cumulative production alone, while peak-rate comparisons can overemphasize short-lived operating conditions. The comparison should match the decision being made.
Operating history can distort the curve
Downtime, artificial lift changes, curtailment, workovers and other operating events can alter observed production without changing the reservoir itself. These effects should be recognized before the curve is treated as a clean measure of geological quality.
Analog quality matters more than analog count
The most useful analogs share the characteristics that matter to the proposed well: target interval, reservoir quality, development density, lateral geometry, completion era and operating context. Adding wells simply because they are nearby can weaken the forecast if they represent a different technical population.
Normalization supports judgment; it does not replace it
No single normalization can make fundamentally different wells equivalent. The purpose is to remove obvious scale and timing effects where appropriate so engineers can focus on the differences that remain and decide whether those differences are technically meaningful.
