The next-best drilling location is a ranking problem.
One map rarely answers the question. The strongest location usually emerges where rock quality, analog performance, landing position, spacing, completions, development constraints and economics all point in the same direction.
Start with the decision, not the dataset
Before comparing wells, define what is being ranked: a set of permitted locations, undeveloped inventory, alternate landing zones, infill opportunities or a broader asset-development sequence. Ranking becomes much cleaner when every candidate is evaluated against the same decision objective.
Separate reservoir quality from operating effects
Production differences can reflect reservoir quality, lateral length, completion design, choke strategy, downtime, parent-child interference and development timing. Raw production alone can reward the wrong variable. A better ranking normalizes what can be normalized and keeps the remaining differences visible.
Use analogs that are actually analogous
Nearby wells are not automatically valid analogs. Formation, landing depth, structural position, pressure state, spacing, completion vintage and depletion context all matter. A defensible analog population should be technically similar enough that its performance says something useful about the candidate being ranked.
Bring petrophysics and production together
Well logs and interpreted petrophysics describe the rock. Production describes how a well and completion performed in that rock. The strongest ranking combines both. A high-quality interval with weak analogous performance should not be treated the same as a high-quality interval with repeatable nearby results.
Development geometry can change the answer
Spacing, orientation, parent-child relationships, existing wellbores, tract boundaries and lateral length can move a candidate up or down even when its subsurface quality is attractive. A technically strong target that cannot be developed efficiently may not be the best capital allocation.
Rank with uncertainty, not false precision
A ranked list should show why one candidate outranks another and how sensitive the order is to uncertain inputs. Confidence should fall when evidence is incomplete, when analog coverage is thin or when production history is truncated. The goal is not to manufacture precision. It is to expose where the evidence supports conviction and where it does not.
